Most self-defense content sells technique. The parts that actually keep people safe are less interesting than that, and they are entirely learnable at home.
Awareness is the technique with the highest success rate, by an enormous margin. Every situation you notice thirty seconds early is a situation you simply walk away from, and walking away has a perfect record. So the first week of home self-defense training is not physical.
Practise these until they are habits: scan a room or street when you enter it and locate the exits; keep your hands free and your phone in your pocket when you are walking somewhere unfamiliar; cross the road rather than pass a group you do not like the look of; leave early rather than argue. None of this is dramatic, and all of it works better than anything below.
Distance is the second layer. Most violence starts inside arm's reach, usually after a conversation. Stepping back and angling off while somebody is talking to you costs nothing and removes their easiest options. Train it as a physical habit, not as a theory.
Keep the list short. Under stress you lose fine motor control, peripheral attention and the ability to pick between options, so five reliable responses beat fifty rehearsed ones.
Stance and movement. Feet staggered, hands up and in front of your face, chin down. Move off at an angle rather than straight backwards, because straight backwards keeps you in range of everything with no weight behind your own strikes.
Four strikes. Palm heel to the face, hammerfist, horizontal elbow, front kick to the groin or thigh. All gross motor, all hard to injure yourself with, all available from wherever your hands already are. Throw them without a wind up: loading the hand back first costs the half second the whole thing depends on.
Getting off the ground. Practise the tactical stand up until it is automatic: side on, one hand free, up facing the threat. Never turn your back to stand.
Releases. Choke from the front, choke from behind, headlock. Drill the shape solo so your body knows the movement, then pressure test them in a class with a live partner, because a release that has never met resistance is a theory. Weapon disarms are not home material at all, and belong with a qualified instructor.
Three sessions a week, 25 to 30 minutes each.
Week 1. Awareness habits daily. Ten minutes of stance and movement per session, ten minutes of palm heels and hammerfists thrown slowly at air, five minutes of tactical stand ups.
Week 2. Add elbows and the front kick. Start working in two minute rounds with a timer. Practise stepping off the line as you strike, never striking from a standstill.
Week 3. Add the release shapes, slowly and solo. Add pad work if you have a partner and pads. Film one round and watch it back.
Week 4. Combine: move off the line, strike twice, create distance, stand up if you go down. Run four two minute rounds at real output. Use the free round timer so you are not deciding when to stop.
After four weeks, find a class. Krav Maga, boxing, Muay Thai and BJJ all give you the resisting partner that home training cannot, and the Krav Maga technique list tells you what to expect from a syllabus.
Everything feels correct from the inside of the movement. The two faults that show up in almost every beginner's footage are the rear hand drifting down after each strike, and retreating in a straight line. You will not feel either of them happening.
mmaGPT is the fix for that. Film a 20 to 60 second clip on your phone, upload it in the browser, and in about 30 to 45 seconds you get timestamped notes on what went wrong plus one drill for each mistake, with defensive problems flagged first. Nothing to download on iPhone or Android. It supplements a qualified instructor rather than replacing one, and pressure testing with a partner remains essential.
