A self defense app should get you moving, not just watching. This list covers training apps and resources that teach and help you practice self defense, plus one way to check your own drills from video. Personal safety alert apps are covered in one short note at the end.

Disclosure: mmaGPT is on this list because we built it.

Which of these are free?

Here is what we can say about free use for each option.

  • mmaGPT: first session free with full feedback, no card. Paid plans start at $9 a month.
  • self-defense.app: check their site for current free options and pricing.
  • GuardIQ: check their site for current free options and pricing.
  • Active Self Protection resources: check their site for current free options and pricing.

What to practice at home

Self defense skill comes from simple movements done under stress: a strong stance, hands up, moving off line, and getting away. At home you can drill stance, guard, basic strikes and footwork on your own. Film a few rounds so you can check that your hands stay up and your balance holds.

A note on personal safety alert apps

Personal safety apps, the kind that share your location or alert contacts, are useful but different. They do not teach you to defend yourself. If you want one, look at the options built into your phone first, then compare apps on their own sites. We do not rank them here.

The list

1. mmaGPT

Film your stance, strikes or escapes from a drill and get feedback on guard, balance and distance. It helps you practice correctly between classes. It is a web app, so it runs in any browser on your phone or computer and there is nothing to download. First session free. Then Lite $9/mo (3 sessions), Starter $19/mo (8), Pro $29/mo (16) or Elite $49/mo (45). Session packs from $3.99.

2. self-defense.app

self-defense.app offers self defense lessons in an app. See their site for its courses and pricing.

3. GuardIQ

GuardIQ is a self defense training app. See their site for current features.

4. Active Self Protection resources

Active Self Protection publishes videos and training resources on self defense. See their site for courses and what is free.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best self defense app?

The best self defense app is one that gets you practicing real movements, not just watching them. mmaGPT leads here because it reviews your own filmed drills, and you can pair it with a structured course app like self-defense.app.

Can you learn self defense from an app?

You can learn the basics and practice movements from an app, but you need a partner and a qualified instructor to train against resistance. Use an app to build habits between classes.

Is there a free self defense app?

Some self defense apps and resources are free to start. mmaGPT's first session is free; check each other app's site for its current free option.

Are personal safety alert apps the same as self defense apps?

No. Personal safety apps share your location or call for help. Self defense training apps teach you how to move and protect yourself. This list is about training.
