Krav Maga Self-Defense: Practical Techniques
Learn fundamental Krav Maga techniques for common attacks. Master threat assessment, striking, and defensive tactics for real-world protection.
What is Krav Maga?
Krav Maga is a practical self-defense system developed for the Israeli Defense Forces. Unlike sport martial arts, Krav Maga focuses on neutralizing real threats quickly and efficiently. There are no rules or points. The only objective is survival.
To check your own technique, film a round of pad work or a drill and upload it to mmaGPT: in about 30 to 45 seconds it marks each strike or defense that breaks form with a video timestamp and gives you a drill to fix it. First session free, no card.
Core Principles
1. Threat Assessment
Before any technique, you must evaluate the situation. Is this a real threat? Can you escape without fighting? What is the attacker's intent? Are there multiple threats?
2. Simultaneous Defense and Attack
Don't block then hit. Do both at once. Every defensive movement should include a counterattack.
3. Target Vulnerable Areas
Krav Maga targets areas that work regardless of attacker size. These include the eyes, throat, groin, knees, and instep.
4. Continuous Combat
Don't stop until the threat is neutralized. One strike is rarely enough.
5. Escape Whenever Possible
The best self-defense is avoiding the fight entirely. Running is always a valid option.
Fundamental Strikes
Palm Strike
Safer than a punch with less chance of hand injury.
Open your hand with fingers together. Strike with the heel of your palm. Target the chin, nose, or temple. Drive through with your body weight for maximum force.
Hammer Fist
A powerful strike with natural motion.
Make a fist and swing downward or sideways like a hammer. Target the temple, nose, or back of neck. Use full body rotation to generate power.
Front Kick (Stomp Kick)
Creates distance and causes damage.
Chamber your knee to your chest. Push and stomp forward with your heel. Target the groin, knee, or midsection. Retract quickly to maintain balance.
Knee Strike
Devastating in close range.
Pull the attacker's head down if possible. Drive your knee upward with your hips. Target the groin, midsection, or face. Use multiple strikes if necessary.
Elbow Strike
Close-range power with minimal risk of injury to yourself.
Use horizontal, upward, or downward angles. Rotate from your hips for power. Target the jaw, temple, or solar plexus. The elbow is a natural weapon with hard bone and short range.
Basic Defenses
360 Defense (Outside Attacks)
For punches, bottles, or clubs coming from outside angles.
Block outward with your forearm at a 45-degree angle. Redirect the attack away from you. Immediately counter with a palm strike, knee, or other technique. Control the weapon arm if applicable.
Inside Defense (Straight Punches)
For jabs or straight attacks coming directly toward you.
Parry with an open hand, palm inward. Redirect the punch just past your head. Counter simultaneously to an exposed target. Move offline as you parry.
Low Kick Defense
For groin kicks or low attacks.
Drop your hand to redirect the incoming leg. Absorb with your forearm, not your hand. Counter immediately as the attacker's leg returns. Create an angle to continue attacking.
Common Attack Responses
Choke Defense (Front)
When grabbed by the throat from the front.
Execute an immediate pluck by grabbing the attacker's wrists. Tuck your chin to protect your throat. Pull down forcefully while stepping back. Counter with a knee to the groin or palm strike. Create distance and escape.
Headlock Escape
When caught in a standing headlock.
Tuck your chin to protect your neck. Strike the groin repeatedly. Step behind the attacker's near leg. Execute a hip throw or takedown backward. Continue with strikes and escape.
Bear Hug Defense (From Behind)
When your arms are trapped from behind.
Drop your base immediately by widening your stance. Hammer fist to the groin by reaching behind. Stomp the attacker's foot. Create space, turn and strike. Escape the situation.
Training Methods
Stress Inoculation
Krav Maga trains under stress to prepare for real encounters.
Fatigue drills before technique work simulate real-world exhaustion. Multiple attacker scenarios teach awareness and priorities. Verbal aggression and distraction build mental toughness. Low-light training prepares for realistic conditions.
Scenario Training
Practice real situations you might encounter.
Bar confrontations. Parking lot attacks. Home invasions. Public transit threats.
Pad Work
Build power and accuracy with equipment.
Focus mitts develop striking precision. Thai pads build kick and knee power. Body shields allow full-power work safely.
Mental Preparation
Self-defense is mental first. Technique follows mindset.
Awareness. Pay attention to your environment at all times. Avoidance. Don't go where trouble is. De-escalation. Use words before fists whenever possible. Commitment. If you must fight, fight to win.

FAQ
Is Krav Maga good for beginners?
Yes. It was built to be learned quickly, so classes start with simple strikes, basic defenses and awareness rather than long forms. Fitness builds as you train, so you do not need to be in shape before your first class.
How long does it take to learn Krav Maga basics?
Most people can perform the core strikes and basic defenses after a few months of regular classes, around two or three a week. Making them work under stress takes longer and comes from repeated scenario training.
Can you learn Krav Maga at home?
You can practice strikes, footwork and solo drills at home. Defenses against grabs, chokes and weapons need a partner and a qualified instructor to learn safely.
How can I get feedback on my Krav Maga between classes?
Film your pad work or drills and upload the clip to mmaGPT. In about 30 to 45 seconds it marks each strike or defense that breaks form with a video timestamp and gives you a drill to fix it, so you bring sharper questions to your instructor.
